Vitamin C, also known as Ascorbic Acid, is a normal component of the skin and is mostly found in the skin’s outer layer known as the epidermis, and lower concentrations on the next skin layer known as dermis. Vitamin C is essential for the synthesis of collagen, a protein substance that is found in the skin’s dermis that is crucial in giving structure not only to the skin, but also to our bones, cartilages and tendons. Collagen on the other hand gives firmness, integrity and elasticity to our skin. However, as people age, the amount of Vitamin C in the skin decreases. This diminution is also heightened by our increased exposure to the sun, or exposure to cigarette smoke.
To mitigate this heightened loss of Vitamin C as we mature both by age and by biological make up, it is encouraged that we take in Vitamin C as supplement or by applying Vitamin C enriched topical solutions or lotions to the skin. If we don’t, our skin with be damaged by the oxidative effect of the sun’s UV rays or by the pollution brought about by smoke.
So why is Vitamin C very important? This vitamin limits the damage caused by Ultraviolet ray/light exposure. It acts as a natural sunscreen to our skin as it does not allow penetration of UVA or UVB rays that are harmful to us. It helps in wound healing so that our skin may not incur further infection and helps the skin regenerate. It also prevents early wrinkling of our skin, making us look older than our age. This vitamin also prevents too much moisture loss that causes dry skin as well as prevention of skin darkening caused by early skin aging due to too much sun exposure.
As an antioxidant and collagen synthesizer, we can therefore sense the reason why Vitamin C is very important and why it is considered as one of our skin’s best bud. Other than increasing supplements and lotions found with Vitamin C, it is also best for us to use alternative measures like using an umbrella when staying for longer periods under the sun, or drinking more water to help the vitamin C content in our body be maintained at the right levels.
